Mxmrys
“Mxmrys (pronounced “Memories”) is a Modern Jazz quartet, hailing from Chicago’s South Side, and compromised of Josh Ross on drums, Elijah Bradford (Ëkoli) on guitar, Kurt Shelby (STNFXCE) on bass, and Christian Swan on Hammond organ and Rhodes. The group began their journey in music together at Chicago High School For The Arts, and have since individually shared stages with the likes of Najee, Nico Segal, KAINA, Ravyn Lenae and Reginald Chapman. However, the onset of the 2020 pandemic marked a turning point for the band; weary of their roles as supporting musicians, they united with a renewed focus on originality. “We all had fatigue. We all wanted to come together and create something of our own,” says Ross.
Over the next few years, the ensemble poured their collective creativity into crafting their debut EP, “Black Void Theory,” a compelling exploration of modern jazz infused with influences from hip-hop to krautrock. Recorded in April of 2023 during two sessions at Palisade Studios in Chicago, IL by Dave Vettraino (Makaya McCraven, Brandee Younger) and mastered by Dave Cooley (J Dilla, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Tame Impala), the 5-track EP encapsulates the band’s unique sound, one that resonates with the intricacies of dreams, memories, and emotions.”
